Have you ever gotten a song stuck in your head and it keeps coming back day after day? Towards the end of last week and over the weekend I did. The song was, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose.” If you are too young to remember, it is a song from the late 1960’s by Burt Bacharach and Hal David which was written for Dionne Warwick. The song is a story of a woman who moved to Los Angeles to pursue fame and fortune, but plans to move back to San Jose, where she was born.

This song seems more fitting as I listened to Dani Johnson share her story of growing up in California, becoming a millionaire in her early 20’s, losing it all and living in a car, starting over with a pay phone as her office and going on to become a highly paid and very successful coach to thousands of people in direct sales businesses. Dani is nothing short of amazing to listen to as she tells her story of going from an abused child of drug addicts to her life as a mother of five children and an internationally know conference speaker.

My friend and mentor Jeff Mills and I attended Dani’s Los Angels Seminar last weekend, October 6-7. Besides being a great trainer and coach for those working in direct sales, Dani is also a very outspoken Christian. I was encouraged to hear her story of faith in Jesus Christ and her acknowledgment that He is the one who made it possible for her to go from a past of pain to a life of success where she can help others. So many “motivational” speakers today are teaching that we have everything within ourselves that can cause us to succeed and that is not the whole truth.

Dani teaches a very simple system for direct sales marketing that uses scripts that have been proven over and over again to work for those who use them. I will be using her system as part of my Mission Springs Coastal Vacations Travel Club business and I will share her approach with everyone on my team. The primary focus of Dani’s approach is that we are not in the business of selling but we are in the business of “Business Development” when we talk to others. She teaches to focus on the needs of others and when those needs can be met by our products or business opportunity, the prospect is able to see that for themselves and then they can choose to join us.
